Primary Focus Focuses on land use planning, zoning protections, sound infrastructure and managed growth and development. Works to protect the water quality of Lake Keowee watershed and to promote a "green" lakeshore environment. Helps HOAs/POAs deal with common problems, community issues and legislation that impact the lakes, property values and lifestyle.
Primary Membership Focus Property owners and Homeowner Associations in Oconee & Pickens Counties. FOLKS members include those who own or have access to Lake Keowee. The membership works closely with commercial interests to protect the lake and maintain its quality for all. HOAs/POAs on/near Lakes Keowee and Hartwell in Oconee, western Pickens and northern Anderson counties.
Examples of Activities
  • Argues for sound land use before official county bodies & other planning venues.
  • Vigorously defends zoning protections for lake and other communities.
  • Actively interfaces w/Duke Energy & other stakeholders regarding Keowee Toxaway concerns.
  • rovides input to variance & special exception requests before the Board of Zoning Appeals.
  • Secures professional help as needed to protect lake community interests.
  • Conducts scientific water quality studies.
  • Obtains grants and partners with Clemson professors on initiatives such as the Habitat Enhancement Program (HEP).
  • Conducts lake and island cleanup sweeps semiannually.
  • Provides information on best plants for vegetative buffers.
  • Sponsors forums on a variety of health-of-lake topics.

Takes public positions for/against proposed legislation or recommendations that affect the Savannah River basin. Examples include

  • Voicing concerns regarding water requirements of the Vogtle power plants.
  • Supporting the Savannah River basin water agreement between SC and GA.
  • Opposing interbasin transfers without more thorough analysis than currently required.
